Whirlwind has the highest standards for the quality and durability of our construction services. We know the longevity of our masonry and plantings depends on what is underneath the surface. We stand behind the quality of our workmanship and materials with a full 3 year warranty on all masonry and 1 year warranty on all plant materials.
FENCES, PERGOLAS & RAISED BEDS
Whirlwind will custom design your fence, pergola or raised bed to fit your garden. We can install pre-made cedar fence, pressure treated fence, composite or aluminum, or we can create something unique. We often build our raised beds with 2” x 12” rough cut oak boards, or create them using a masonry product.
FIRE PITS & OUTDOOR KITCHENS
We can install a pre-made fire pit, or custom build one out of stone. Often we use granite boulders or just create a recess in the patio. Each fire pit is unique, and can be gas or wood burning. Outdoor kitchens may include barbeque grills, bars, fireplaces or pizza ovens. Landscape lighting can also be built into your outdoor space.
PATIOS & WALKWAYS
We specialize in Goshen stone flat work. This stone is locally quarried mica schist that we shape by hand to join with very tight seams. Whirlwind is your local hardscape expert. We can your build walkway or patio with any of a large variety of concrete paver, including those by Ideal, Belgard, Techo-Bloc, Unilock or Cambridge. Walkways and patios of blue stone, granite or field stone are commonly built in our area too. We would be happy to show you examples of our built projects.
PLANTINGS, TRANSPLANTINGS, LAWN
Whirlwind emphasizes putting the right plant in the right place so that it will thrive with minimal care. This means taking into consideration soil type, sun exposure, drainage, as well as mature plant size. We will not use invasive plant material or those that will not survive in our climate. Emphasis is placed on choosing a variety of material that will have interest throughout the seasons. Plantings include trees, shrubs, perennials, vines, ground covers, annuals and vegetables. Lawn services include seeding, sod lawns and hydro seeding.
STEPS & LANDINGS
We design and install steps and landings out of natural stone, manufactured block, or wood. Natural stone such as granite, blue stone, or Goshen stone are often used for their durability, non-slip surface and flatness. We make sure that the stairs each have the same rise and tread, and that the ratio makes for a comfortable stride.
STONE WALLS
The enigmatic New England stone wall is built to be strong and enduring. It is engineered to move with the frost, and yet stands in place for generations. We most often use Goshen stone for our retaining and free- standing walls, as it is locally sourced and abundant. For a more traditional look, New England field stone is the best choice. There are also many concrete wall products available that are more affordable than natural stone, and equally durable and maintenance free.
WATER FEATURES
Ponds, fountains, and bird baths introduce the element of water into your garden. The splashing sound of re-circulating water is a great way to reduce noise pollution in your yard. We can design and install your feature to blend in with its natural surroundings, or to create a dramatic focal point with something sculptural.
